Refusing a bath or shower
Bathing can feel frightening, uncomfortable, or confusing. Start with reassurance and comfort.
Check first
- Is the room cold or the water uncomfortable?
- Could they be in pain or afraid of falling?
- Is the running water too loud?
- Do they feel exposed or unsure what you are asking?
Try this
- 1Make it comfortable. Warm the room, prepare supplies, and check the water temperature. Keep them covered with a warm towel as much as possible. Warm their clothes and towels in a warmer or the dryer for comfort. Check that they are comfortably warm, never hot.
- 2Keep it simple. Offer one small choice: “Would you like to wash now or after breakfast?” Explain one step at a time and let them do what they can.
- 3Pause if they become upset. Avoid arguing or forcing the bath. Try again at a calmer time, or offer a gentle wash with a warm cloth.
Words to try
- “Let's freshen up so you feel comfortable.”
- “Here's a warm cloth. You can wash your face.”
- “That feels uncomfortable? Let's stop for a moment.”
- If they say they already washed: “Okay. Would you like a warm cloth for your hands?”
Keep it safe
- Use a nonslip surface and suitable support.
- Stay nearby if they need supervision.
- If helping them into or out of the bath feels unsafe, ask for an assessment and appropriate equipment.

When to seek help
- Contact their healthcare provider about new pain, skin sores, a sudden change in behaviour, or ongoing difficulty keeping them clean.
- A home-care professional or occupational therapist can help with bathing routines and equipment.
A gentle reminder
A full shower is not the only way to help someone stay clean. A smaller wash can be a useful step on a difficult day.
